Letter from Principal Re: Incident at ACSS/BGMS

May 10, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians of Betty Gilbert Middle School

As you may be aware, at approximately 9:15am on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, BGMS was placed under a code yellow lockdown (a code yellow lockdown involves securing the building and restricting access to the school) by the school administration and the RCMP. The decision was made out of an abundance of caution to keep all students and staff safe and the school secure. The school was in lockdown while the RCMP investigated a concerning social media post involving Aldergrove Community Secondary. Upon investigation, it was determined that the social media post depicted a ‘stage prop’ weapon from the drama department. There was no immediate threat to the safety of students and staff and with the help of the RCMP, the situation was resolved in about thirty minutes.

As always, the quick response of students, school staff and the RCMP was appreciated. Students and staff should be commended for their calmness and cooperation. Supports for any students that require assistance will be in place as needed. Parents with any questions should feel free to contact me at the office.

Sincerely,

Zoltan Bako

Principal, BGMS
